Cinderella and the Colonel by KM Shea

I am a huge fan Of Cinderella retellings. I have read A lot of them! My favorite one of all time is Cinderella and the Colonel by KM Shea. She has a series of retold fairy tales(Timeless fairytales) that are all connected. They are all really good but this one is my favorite. I read this book on my kindle probably at least once or twice a month (Seriously!). I love it every time!

Cinderella or Duchess Lacreux is a 17 yr old young woman who has just become a duchess because of her father's death. Her kingdom Trieux has also been recently taken over by Erlauf, a country with a large military. She is being flooded by taxes and stretched thin with all of her tasks and things to keep track of so she can keep her home and lands, Averyon Chateau. She sold all of her nice things and lives and looks like a servant. But she is determined to keep her servants and all of her land. Colonel Fredrich, a very important person in the Erlauf army, starts courting her. Cinderella starts to get more and more problems added to her plate and Fredrich helps her laugh and makes her see that Erlauf isn't as evil as it seems.

The characters are very well developed and strong people. Cinderella was not physically abused or treated cruelly. She was not winy. She did break down a couple of times but it was because she has some very hard problems placed on her shoulders that a 17 year old should not deal with alone. The Colonel is amazing and very good to Cinderella. He was always looking out for Cinderella and was not pushy. But he was also a fully developed true hero and not some distant shallow guy who likes her because of her pretty face or because he saw her do something nice one time. He knows her completely and loves every bit of her fiery and stubborn self.
